In today’s England there are many castles from middle ages, one of them is Bodiam Castle.
Bodiam Castle was built in 1385 by Sir Edvard Dalyngigge, who was king Edward III knight. Bodiam Castle is located near Robertsbridge in East Sussex. Castle was built as defense from France invasion during the Hundred Year’s War, war between England and France .
As veteran soldier from Hundred Year’s War, Sir Edvard Dalyngigge get permission to built castle from Richard II. The area around Bodiam Castle was landscaped when the castle was built.
Bodiam Castle is one of best examples of medieval moated military architecture in England. Bodiam Castle’s moat is very wide and almost impregnable. It has purpose to prevent enemy from climbing on castle’s wall and to make siege machinery virtually useless. Bodiam Castle has no keep, as many other castles from that time. It has big towers on corners.
Through several generations, Bodiam Castle was in possession of Dalyngrigges family, until their line became extinct, when the castle passed by marriage to the Lewknor family. It was owned by Fewknor family until 16th century. During English Civil War it was owned by John Tufton, he sold castle to help pay fines levied against him by Parliament. After that castle was left as a picturesque ruin until 1829, when John Fuller rebuilt it.
Today’s look of Bodiam Castle is almost same as when it was built in 14th century. It is one of most visited location in England and one of most romantic castles to visit. If you want to go back in time of knights and princesses, you should really visit this amazing castle.
